Job Description:

The Department of Public Safety’s Program Coordinator provides advocacy, operational, and programmatic support for community engagement and outreach initiatives. This individual plays a key role in coordinating and implementing community-building initiatives and conversations among students, staff, and community members

that promote a deepening sense of belonging, trust, and connection with the department. In carrying out these

responsibilities, this individual works to improve community advocacy and empowerment, community-police relations, transparency and accountability, and support for victims of interpersonal violence. The Coordinator supports the Director of Advocacy, Engagement, and Communications by planning and organizing events and programs, managing outreach and communications, and carrying out day-to-day administrative tasks.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate programming and advocacy initiatives
  • Coordinate and implement DPS events and programs, including the MET High School internship program, Safewalk, discussion series, etc.
  • Carry a portfolio of at least two programs/events that engage with the student population
  • Provide logistical support in coordinating meetings, managing an engagement calendar, as well as logistics for programs (taking meeting minutes, event set-up, food, location, securing guest speakers, emailing and posting flyers around campus, photography)
  • Conduct outreach and identify student groups and departments for future partnerships
  • Support the development of opportunities for partnerships by engaging community organizations, community leaders, youth, and other stakeholders in Providence.
  • Supervise student assistants and manage assignments that support department success such as distribution of printed and electronic materials; other clerical needs; general event support
  • Assist with implementing digital and in-person strategies to collect feedback, recommendations, and input from community members
  • Represent DPS/Community Engagement team at events and programs
  • Serve as a secondary liaison in working with the community through individual and group concerns. Assist with gathering feedback and input from discussions with community stakeholders
  • Research different topics of importance, such as policing, community relations, accountability, safety, and resources for survivors of crime
  • Attend and participate in on and off-campus working groups
  • Support the department’s communications efforts
  • Assist the Director with communications projects as needed
  • Assist with the community newsletter, including gathering content and growing audiences
  • Manage department social media accounts in coordination with a communications student employee
  • Assist with the design of graphic materials including event posters, recruitment materials, safety information, maps, and pamphlets
  • Maintain website updates
  • Support public information and transparency initiatives, including the DPS Community Survey, complaint forms, and other feedback mechanisms
  • Assist with gathering and collecting data for annual reporting and CALEA accreditation
  • Create PowerPoints and other tools for presentations
  • Support diversity and inclusion initiatives
  • Assist with planning and implementing department events and Diversity Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP) initiatives
  • Plan logistics for initiatives and events in coordination with the Training Bureau to develop and implement diversity training programs that assist department personnel in understanding issues in the community, as well as assisting officers with acquiring the skills and information needed to be sensitive to cross-cultural issues.
  • Assist with recruitment initiatives for the department to cultivate diverse, talented applicant pools and pipelines.
  • Dimensions:
  • Engagement and programming for the University’s approximately 10,000 students and 4,000 staff/faculty regarding personal and public safety issues.
  • Working with the Director, publicize department events and programs creating and utilizing a variety of marketing tools
  • Working with staff and faculty to create and maintain relationships with University/community partners and area organizations and provide coordination for partnership programming
  • Working with staff and students, initiate meetings and manage logistics; execute communications to involved parties
  • Supervise student assistants and manage assignments that support department success such as distribution of printed and electronic materials; other clerical needs; general event support
  • Use practical and mature judgment to resolve low to medium level conflicts or issues as they arise


Job Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree, plus 2- 3 years of relative experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of higher-education or non-profit setting is highly desirable.

Job Competencies:

  • Understanding and familiarity of issues regarding policing and groups from diverse populations, particularly from BIPOC, LGBTQ+, undocumented, first-generation college, and low-income, and international communities
  • Experience in grassroots/community organizing, restorative justice, and/or trauma informed approaches a plus
  • Ability to effectively communicate, collaborate, and connect with people with various backgrounds, identities, and lived experiences. Demonstrated interpersonal, collaborative, and relationship building skills.
  • Strong project management, administrative skills, and event planning experience
  • Strong listening, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to think critically and creatively with strong detail orientation.
  • Must be flexible and able to adapt in a changing and emergency -service centered environment.
  • Familiarity with criminal justice and community policing issues
  • Familiarity and experience with diversity, equity, and inclusion work and/or bias incidents
  • Knowledge of social media platforms
  • Computer skills/experience in: Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, and Social Media. Familiarity with design programs like Canva, Adobe, or Sketch a plus.
  • Evenings, weekends, and holidays may occasionally be required.
  • Candidates must possess a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive environment.
